How To Make Your Hot Water Heater Last Longer

Read some extra info regarding home improvement at: best local plumbing company

[ez-toc]

Your hot water heater is an important appliance in your home.

Without it, you’d be washing your dishes, bathing, and showering all with cold water.

Like any plumbing appliance, your hot water heater requires regular care and maintenance to help it last as long as possible.

You may also need water heater repair and installation London Ontario to make sure your water heater is working as well as it can be.

As local plumbers in London, we’re here to help.

Hot water heater repair is a common issue whether you have a residential plumbing or commercial plumbing system.

But regular hot water heater maintenance is important.

It can make your hot water heater last longer, but it can also help you avoid 24 hour emergency plumbing repair situations.

Let’s take a look at some ways you can help your hot water heater last as long as possible.

What Type Of Water Heater Do You Have?

The type of water heater you have changes how you’ll want to maintain it and the types of repairs it may need.

Each type of heater functions differently and has different benefits to it, so it’s important to know which one you have so you know how best to take care of it.

Electric Hot Water Heaters

Electric hot water heaters are the most common kind of water heaters.

They use electricity rather than gas.

This can make them appealing as a sustainable option.

They can also be easier to operate than gas heaters.

Over time, electric heaters can require new elements and thermostats to keep them running smoothly.

Electric heaters also need to be flushed regularly to keep them in good working order.

Gas Hot Water Heaters

Gas water heaters are a less expensive option compared to electric water heaters and are also a common option.

However, the efficiency of gas heaters varies a lot by model.

So it’s important to know what model you have or what model you plan on getting.

Gas water heaters need to be flushed regularly to maintain good functioning, just like electric heaters.

Tankless Hot Water Heaters

Tankless hot water heaters are a less common option than gas or electric.

They’re becoming more popular.

Instead of heating up a tank of water like other heaters, they heat up water as you use it.

This makes them more efficient, because it means they won’t waste energy heating too much water at once.

Plus, they’re more compact than other types of water heaters.

They also reduce the risk of your hot water heater bursting and flooding your basement.

RELATED: Sump pump repair and installation plumber London Ontario

Hybrid Hot Water Heaters

Hybrid hot water heaters are both efficient and good for the environment.

Hybrid heaters use multiple methods to heat up water, like electricity and heat pumps.

Like any other water heater, they also require maintenance to keep working their best for as long as possible.

Basic Maintenance On Your Hot Water Heater

The specific maintenance tasks that should be carried out on your water heater depend on the type you have.

If you’re unsure about what kind of water heater you have or what maintenance should be performed, call London Plumbing Solutions today - we can help.

Regular maintenance is important for keeping your water heater efficient and for also increasing its lifespan.

You can maintain your water heaters yourself.

Keep in mind though that they can get pretty hot.

Instead, consider scheduling regular maintenance appointments with us here at London Plumbing Solutions.

We can help give you the peace of mind that your water heater is in good hands and going to last, without the hassle of learning how to maintain them yourself.

Repairing Your Hot Water Heater

Like any appliance, you can run into problems with your hot water heater.

However, hot water heaters can be repaired in may cases, and a problem doesn’t necessarily mean you have to replace it altogether.

If your hot water heater isn’t working the way it should be, there are a couple common repairs you can do rather than replacing the whole thing.

For example, if you notice problems with your gas water heater, it may just need its control valve or thermal igniter replaced.

If you have an electric heater, it may be that the pressure release valve or temperature valve need to be replaced.

Both these repairs can be done without needing to replace the entire unit.

If you notice problems with your hot water but aren’t sure what to do call London Plumbing Solutions to come inspect and evaluate the best steps for repair.

Hot Water Heater Replacement Plumbers

While there are a lot of repairs that can be done on water heaters, sometimes you also end up needing to replace the whole thing.

If you have an older heater, this will end up being a necessity eventually.

Some signs that indicate your water heater is old and may need to be replaced include leaks at the bottom or top of the heater, a lack of hot water, rusty water form taps, or strange noises coming from the heater.

You also might consider upgrading to a more efficient or environmentally friendly type of heater.

No matter the reason, your London Plumbing Solutions contractor can help you choose the best hot water heater for your household.

We can also help dispose of your old water heater and install a new one for you.

Call London Plumbing Solutions Today

Whether you need a new water heater or just want some maintenance done on your current one, we’re here to help.

Call London Plumbing Solutions today.

Common Issues In Plumbing In London Ontario’s Older Homes

Get further tips about DIY home repair at: 24 hour emergency plumber

If you own an older home, you know that they can come with certain costs and repair needs that you might not find in something more current.

Of course, older homes also have a certain charm, beauty, and history to them that you just won’t find in a more modern home.

It’s important to know the types of issues you may experience if you own an older home or if you’re looking to purchase one.

It’s also important to know a London Ontario plumber so you have someone to contact if you do need repairs or replacements.

Here at London Plumbing Solutions, we offer a wide variety of residential plumbing services, including:

But what type of service are you more likely to need in an older London Ontario home?

Let’s take a look.

Lead Pipes

Lead is a material that you may find in homes built in the early 1900s.

Lead was most commonly used for sewer line plumbing installations and water mains, but it comes with a host of problems.

Lead is a highly toxic material.

It can cause memory loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal pain, and irritability if you eat it.

If you have purchased an old home that has lead pipes, call London Plumbing Solutions today to get them replaced.

RELATED: How To Tell When It’s Time To Replace Your Pipes

Galvanized Pipes

Galvanized pipes were used commonly in homes built before the 1960s.

They are pipes made out of iron and coated with zinc.

These kinds of pipes are very susceptible to eroding and breakage due to the erosion of the zinc, and often become clogged with rust.

Galvanized pipes are hard to replace.

You can replace them piece by piece as they break down, rather than all at once.

While these don’t need to be immediately replaced like lead pipes, they usually don’t last as long.

And even if they do, if your house is old enough to have galvanized pipes, they’ll need to be replaced soon anyway.

Polybutylene Pipes

Polybutylene pipes were designed in the 1970s as a replacement for copper pipes.

They were even nicknamed "the pipe of the future".

While they were used in many homes in the 1980s, they didn’t last long.

Polybutylene was found to become brittle and crack when exposed to oxidants in public water systems.

The manufacturers of these pipes actually had to pay a class action lawsuit that claimed the pipes were defective.

If you purchase a home that still has any existing polybutylene pipes, you should contact a plumber to have them replaced before they fail and potentially do damage to your home.

Bellied Pipes

A pipe that is bellied has been bent too many times.

Usually, this happens to pipes installed underneath homes.

When the house gradually moves and shifts with time, it can cause the pipes to shift and bend.

If they shift too much, they can create a slope, called a "belly", that ends up restricting the flow of water.

The bellies also can create pools of waste or sediment in the pipes.

This can cause you to need drain cleaning services.

If you suspect your new home may have a bellied pipe, call London Plumbing Solutions today.

Old, Outdated Fixtures

This is a common problem in older homes, but luckily updating your fixtures is a simple fix.

Fixtures in your home include things like faucets on your sink or bathtub, showerheads, toilets, and pipes.

When your fixtures are old, they’re more at risk for leaking and clogging which can sometimes turn into more serious damage or repairs, including higher than normal water bills.

If your fixtures are outdated, its important to get them updated as soon as possible to prevent damage.

Call London Plumbing Solutions today for all your new plumbing fixture installations, including:

Faulty Plumbing Repairs

All old houses have history, but sometimes that history isn’t so great.

Faulty installations and repairs are a common cause of plumbing problems in older homes, often due to plumbing that wasn’t repaired or installed correctly the first time.

Problems like these can lead to leaks, clogs, and other serious problems.

If you suspect that your home’s plumbing is faulty, it’s important to contact a professional to find the problem and make the repairs that are needed.

Old, Failing Sewer Line

Your sewer lines carry waste form your home to the city’s sewer system.

Older homes will sometimes have clay or metal sewer lines.

These sewer lines corrode and fail over time, so it’s important to watch for the signs that your sewer line may need to be replaced.

Faulty sewer lines can cause wastewater to flow back into your home which can cause a lot of damage, especially if your sump pump isn’t working.

RELATED: Sump pump plumbing services

How To Tell If Your Sewer Line Needs To Be Replaced

There are some important signs to watch for that can indicate that your sewer line needs to be replaced.

If you notice wet spots in your yard or water backing up into your home from your drains or toilet, these are both signs your sewer line is failing and should be replaced.

If there are unpleasant odors in your home, especially near drains, that’s another sign the sewage line might be backed up and in need of replacement.

Finally, if you notice gurgling lines in your drain, that can be a sign that your sewage line needs to be replaced or a sign of a different plumbing problem.

If you notice any of these signs in your home, call London Plumbing Solutions today.

We’ll send out a local plumber to assess your sewage line and avoid the damage a failing sewer line could cause if left alone.

Your pipes are one of the most important things keeping your house running.

They bring water in and sewage out.

Pipes let you use the bathroom, shower, cook, and so much more without needing to do more than turn on a faucet.

Like anything, though, pipes have a lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced.

At London Plumbing Solutions, we are your expert plumbers in London, Ontario for all things plumbing, including pipe replacement.

We offer both residential plumbing services and commercial plumbing services.

So how do you know when you need to replace your pipes?

Before it becomes a 24 hour plumbing emergency service type of situation.

Read on to discover more about pipe replacement in your home or business and how we can help you.

How Often Should You Replace Your Pipes?

This really depends on the kind of pipes you have in your home and the environment you live in.

Copper pipes, for example, last for up to 50 years.

Iron pipes, on the other hand, may only last for 30 years.

The best way to determine how often you should replace your pipes is by finding out what kind of material they are made out of.

Then, call London Plumbing Solutions to book a service call.

Benefits Of Replacing Your Pipes

There are a few benefits to replacing your pipes.

Firstly, having a new set of pipes increases the lifespan of your plumbing system, of course.

New pipes can also ensure a higher quality of water supply coming into your home.

Plus, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your plumbing is as current as it can be, and you may even end up needing to call your plumber less often.

Top 10 Signs You Need To Replace Your Pipes

There are many warning signs that may indicate you should replace your pipes.

Let’s take a look at a few of them here.

Your Pipes Are Clogged

Pipes get clogged sometimes.

That’s why there are drain cleaning plumbing services in London that can help.

But if your drains are clogging a lot, it’s probably a good indicator that you should replace them.

Clogged pipes can result in water damage to your home, so replacing them is important because it could save you from further damage down the line.

Your Pipes Are Leaking

A leaky pipe is a sign you should replace that particular section of pipe.

But just like with clogged drains,

Sometimes, a leak can occur because of changes in temperature, tree roots, or other environmental factors.

RELATED: Frozen Pipe Plumbing Repairs

Other times, leaks happen when your pipes are old and worn down.

Leaks are something you really want to avoid because they can lead to expensive water damage in your home.

If you have a leaky pipe, a repair plumber can assess whether that pipe needs to be repaired or whether you should replace your pipes altogether.

There's Water Damage Around Them

Noticing water damage around your home is another indicator that your pipes might need to be replaced.

Sometimes you might notice water damage around a leaky pipe before you notice the leak itself.

That’s especially true if it’s a small leak.

But even a small amount of water damage could indicate a much bigger problem.

So if you notice water damage, call London Plumbing Solutions today.

Your Water Bills Are Unexpectedly High

If you’ve noticed your water bills increasing even though your water usage hasn’t, it’s possible that your plumbing system has a leak in it somewhere.

Remember, leaks can lead to water damage to your home that can be quite expensive to repair.

If you notice your water bills increasing, call London Plumbing Solutions today - we’ll come inspect your system, even if you don’t notice any damage or other problems.

There Are Strange Noises In Your Pipes

If you’ve started hearing strange noises in your pipes, that’s something to pay attention to.

Unusual noises can indicate a serious problem with your plumbing, so it’s always best to get it checked.

Your plumber will be able to tell you whether it’s a simple fix or whether you may need a deeper pipe replacement plumbing service.

You Have Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is the worst.

Who wants to shower when the water is barely drizzling on you?

Low water pressure is more than just annoying, though.

It can actually be a sign that you have a clogged pipe.

Clogged pipes can also lead to other problems, like issues with your faucets, appliances, and even leaks.

If your water pressure is low, you should call a plumber to evaluate the situation and whether you need to replace your pipes.

Your Water Is Dirty

If your water is dirty when it’s usually clear and healthy, this can be a big sign your pipes need to be replaced.

If you notice an issue with your water quality, call London Plumbing Solutions today.

You Need To Call A Plumber Frequently

Getting your pipes repaired is a hassle.

Getting them repaired frequently is even worse.

If you notice you have consistent plumbing issues and are always having to contact the plumber, this is a sure sign you need your pipes replaced.

In the long run you’ll also save money from skipping out on all the small but expensive repairs.

You Notice Mould Or Mildew Buildup

If you notice mould or mildew building up in your house, it might be time to get your pipes replaced.

Mould and mildew thrive in damp places, so their presence in your home could indicate a leak somewhere.

If you notice buildup of mould and mildew in your home, you should have a plumber come take a look.

You're Renovating Your Home

Home renovations are an excellent time to upgrade your plumbing.

Not only are you already in the process of redoing things, it’ll give you peace of mind knowing that your plumbing, along with the rest of your house, is up to date.

How to Prevent Clogged Drains

Learn additional ideas on fixing up your home's plumbing at: emergency licensed plumbing company

[ez-toc]

Clogged drains can be a common issue that many people face, especially if you’re not aware of how many things can affect your plumbing systems.

Your drain lines carry water and waste from your home into the sewage system.

A clog can slow down this process or even cause drains to stop doing their job completely.

This is how backups can happen.

Clogged drains can be frustrating, but here at London Plumbing Solutions, we’re here to help.

If you’ve got a clogged drain you just can’t loosen up, we’ll do a video camera drain inspection to see what the issue is, perform a drain cleaning service near me, and get your pipes running smoothly once more.

Whether it’s a residential plumbing or a commercial plumbing clogged drain, we’ve got you covered.

And if you’ve got a clogged drain in the middle of the night that’s causing flooding or backups, no problem – just call our 24 hour emergency plumbing hotline and we’ll be there for you.

But of course, the best cure for a clogged drain is to make sure your drain doesn’t get clogged in the first place.

Here are some ways you can prevent your drains from getting clogged.

Keep Your Hair Out Of The Drain

This one may seem obvious, but many people forget to clear their hair after they shower or bathe.

This is a common cause of clogged drains and pipes.

A plunger doesn’t usually clear it either, since it can get clumped up in your drain, mixing with soap scum and dead skin cells.

Using a hair catcher with fine mesh will prevent this problem and help keep your drains clear.

Empty out the catcher once a week or so, and you won’t have to worry about your pipes getting backed up.

Don’t Pour Your Grease Down The Drain

We know how annoying it can be to deal with grease or oil.

You’ve cooked a wonderful meal for yourself and your family – or maybe a special someone – but what do you do with the oil that’s left over?

You might be tempted to just send it down the drain, but that’s a terrible idea.

In fact, greasy food and oil is one of the most common causes of clogged drains.

Even if you have a kitchen sink garbage disposal system, greasy food can still add to this issue.

This includes any cooking oils, butter, bacon grease, or other fats.

Don’t send this stuff down the drain, or you’ll be calling us soon enough.

Instead, keep a cooking grease collector near your cooking area.

You can get products for this purpose, but in my opinion a tin can you keep in the freezer will do just fine.

Why add more waste and spend more money?

Avoid Hard Water Mixing With Soap Scum

Some areas have hard water in their plumbing systems.

This isn’t so much an issue in London itself, but if you live outside the city it can be an issue.

Hard water can react with whatever soap you use, creating soap scum that’s slimy and sticky.

This stuff builds up inside your pipes, and sticks to hair, dead skin cells, food particles, or anything else that makes its way down your drain.

You can prevent this buildup by switching to liquid soaps and body washes.

Or, you can call London Plumbing Solutions – we’ll help you out with a water softener installation.

Stop Tree Roots With Copper Sulphate

It may seem surprising, but tree roots are a pretty common cause of clogged drains.

Tree roots seek out water sources in the ground, and condensation on the outside of your pipes is a great source.

If you need a leaky pipe repair all the greater, since tree roots can worm their way into the crack and make the leak larger.

Pouring half a cup of copper sulphate crystals in one of your toilets every few months can prevent this issue.

Keep in mind, if your drain already has started to slow down, this method may not work.

This is a purely preventative, not a solution to an existing problem.

Copper sulphate is absolutely safe to use and only gets rid of the roots in the drain.

It won’t hurt your trees.

Keep Your Drains Clean

Prevention is the name of the game.

Anything you do from the start, to prevent clogged drains, will be very helpful in the long run.

Getting a plumber to clean your drain lines, every year and half or so, will prevent more costly visits in the future.

If your drain pipes need cleaning beyond these tips, it’s important to reach out to a professional.

How Long Does A Hot Water Heater Last?

Like all household appliances, your hot water heater won’t last forever.

Older hot water heaters often begin to break down due to age.

The average lifespan for most hot water heaters is typically between eight and twelve years.

Regular maintenance to your hot water heater is vital to ensure a long life span.

Without regular maintenance, hot water heaters often experience multiple issues, such as leaky pipes and inefficiency.

Luckily, our qualified plumbers can help with regular maintenance to prolong the life span of your hot water heater.

How To Tell If Your Hot Water Heater Needs To Be Replaced

It might be tricky to gauge the health of your hot water heater by yourself.

Below are some tips to help you determine whether your hot water heater needs to be replaced.

If you do, give us a call – we’re here to help.

It’s Leaking

Leaks are one of the most common hot water heater issues seen by plumbers.

Over time, your hot water heater will eventually begin to wear down and develop leaks.

If these leaks are due to an aged appliance, it might be time to think about replacing your hot water heater.

A hot water heater leak is a potentially serious issue that can cause significant water damage to your home.

So if you notice leaks, call London Plumbing Solutions right away.

It’s Noisy

A noisy hot water heater is another sign that it might need to be replaced.

Over time, minerals in the water begin to settle and create a hard crust at the bottom of your hot water heater.

When heated, this crust starts to break off and slam against the sides of the tank, creating a knocking noise.

Left untreated, mineral build up in your hot water heater may lead to:

Corrosion

Leaks

Reduced efficiency

Appliance failure

If you’ve been hearing a noise coming from your hot water heater, call us today to avoid any complications.

Your Water Looks Rusty

Rusty water is yet another sign that your hot water tank needs replacing.

Rust in the water of hot water heaters indicates that the material of the inner tank is corroding.

If this is the case, your entire hot water heater will eventually fail.

Waiting too long to replace your hot water heater once rust has developed can have dangerous consequences.

Rusty water contains harmful toxins that are being released into your home and potentially impacting your family’s health.

Additionally, waiting too long to repair a rusty hot water heater can become extremely costly.

So once the rust shows up, your next step is to call London Plumbing Solutions.

Your Bills Are Increasing

No one likes receiving an unexpectedly high water bill.

If your water bills have been higher than normal despite not changing your water consumption habits, it might be time to think about replacing your hot water heater.

Over time, hot water heaters tend to lose their efficiency.

One of the most common reasons our clients replace their water heaters is simply because they aren’t as efficient as they used to be.

Call us today to find out how replacing your hot water heater can help to save you money on your water bills.

What To Consider When Replacing Your Hot Water Heater

Now that you’ve read all about how to tell if your hot water header needs replacing, you might be wondering what factors you should be considering when purchasing a new one.

Perhaps the most important factor to consider when replacing your hot water heater is its age.

All the issues discussed above can be contributed to an aged hot water heater.

Similarly, you’ll also want to consider the severity of your hot water heater’s issues.

Occasionally, the problem can be fixed with a simple repair.

Other times, however, the cost of the repairs ends up being higher than simply replacing the appliance.

Finally, you’ll also want to consider the specifications of your new hot water heater.

For instance, capacity, size, and the energy efficiency capabilities are all important factors to consider when purchasing a new hot water heater.

Look, we all love it when life is nice and convenient.

Companies know this, so they market things in a way to make them seem the most convenient.

But here, our London plumbers try to keep in mind the maxim “don’t believe everything you read.”

Why?

Because there are a whole lot of products out there that market themselves as “flushable”, even though flushing them down the toilet really is a terrible idea.

We get called to do London Ontario drain cleaning services all the time, especially when it comes to residential plumber service.

And sometimes you can’t help it when your drain is clogged – tree roots can grow, you can have a main sewer line plumbing issue, or a handful of other issues that might pop up.

But often, it’s because people flush things they shouldn’t.

Let’s take a look.

What Does Flushable Even Mean, Anyway?

Can someone give me a definition?

I think it’s one of those words, like “natural” that doesn’t really mean anything specific.

Broadly speaking, anything that’s going to fit down your toilet is “flushable”.

Ping pong balls are flushable, Lego pieces are flushable – but does that mean it’s a good idea?

Which brings me to flushable baby wipes.

You know, those things you use to clean up your baby when they’ve… yeah.

They’re sturdier than toilet paper, which makes them work better.

So convenient, right?

But what about when you’re done with it?

It seems convenient to just flush them down the toilet, but that’s where the problem comes in.

See, these wipes aren’t made of paper.

They’re made of either cloth or plastic fibres, and these things don’t break down in water.

And while the inside of your pipes are nice and smooth when they’re first installed, they don’t always stay that way.

Over the years, small chips and tears can happen inside your pipes.

They can end up with tiny cracks in them, and tree roots can grow through those cracks.

These are all great places for debris to get caught as it goes down the drain.

That’s not an issue with toilet paper – even if it does get caught, it’ll dissolve pretty quickly as more water runs past it.

But “flushable” baby wipes? Forget it.

They’ll be there a long time, constricting the flow of water down the drain.

What’s more, it’ll become easier for other things to clump up around it.

Especially since you don’t just flush a single wipe down the drain and then move on with your life.

Flushable baby wipes will clog your toilet, and it’s not a lot of fun to have to clear it out.

Instead of having to call a clogged toilet repair plumber, or even a 24 hour emergency plumber, just don’t flush ‘em in the first place!

What Else Can Clog Your Toilet?

So okay, don’t flush baby wipes down the drain.

What else can clog your toilet?

Some of the most common items we find that clog toilet include:

• Menstrual products

• Cotton swabs

• Dental floss

• Paper towels

• Clumps of hair

• Condoms

• Children’s toys

• Cat litter

What do these things have in common?

They all take a long time to break down – if they ever do.

So, What Can You Flush?

Alright look, your toilet might seem like it’s an all purpose garbage disposal.

But it’s not – there’s not a whole lot you should flush down your toilet.

First off, human waste – that’s what it’s there for.

Next, toilet paper.

Obviously.

Anything water based is fine as well – if that container of milk has been sitting in your fridge a little too long, and you don’t want to stink up your kitchen sink, go ahead and flush it.

That’s it.

But what about-

Nope.

Don’t do it.

I don’t care what the package says, don’t flush it.

What To Do If Your Toilet Is Clogged

Is your toilet clogged?

Have you been flushing things you shouldn’t be flushing?

Don’t worry, we won’t judge.

It’s not your fault the package lied to you.

Give us a call, and we’ll be there.
